Wadi Laban Bridge Monitoring Upgrade

Cementys engineers installed with success a unique monitoring system combining GNSS/Insar technologies with optical fiber sensors in Wadi Leban Bridge in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

Wadi Leban Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge located at the south-west of Riyadh. It connects Riyadh to its south suburb, such that heavy traffic is crossing the bridge. Continuous Structural Health Monitoring with seasonal and traffic effects will help the KSA Ministry of Transport to  better maintain the bridge over the next decades.

 

Grand Paris Express Line 16 Work Package 2 – Monitoring new project for Cementys – Quarta

We are pleased to collaborate with Salini ImpregiloNGE consortium on the line 16 of Grand Paris Express Project.

The monitoring work of Line 16 Work Package 2 deals with the Tunnel portion between the connection structure at the Aulnay operation center and the Bel-Air in Chelles (Seine Saint Denis).

Combined with other Grand Paris Express projects, Cementys will monitor 11 TBM (13 drives) and more than 45 construction sites around Paris.

In addition, Cementys Vietnam engineers will provide technical support in Data Management to our Parisian engineers dealing with night shift surveillance for Grand Paris Express projects.

Wadi Leban Bridge Project

At the end of 2018, Cementys installed with success for the first time a monitoring system combining GNSS/Insar technologies and optical fiber sensors on Wadi Leban Bridge in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Wadi Leban Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge located at the south-west of Riyadh. It connects Riyadh to its south suburbs hence a lot of traffic is crossing the bridge. Thereby, monitoring such a very busy bridge through seasonal and traffic effects is a crucial issue.
During last year intervention, Cementys did an upgrade of the still running monitoring system that was installed in 2014 by adding more optical fiber sensors and a brand new GNSS/Insar measurement combination at strategic location provided by the Ministry of Transport and the King Saud University.

The optical fiber sensors are based on the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology. A grating similar to a « barcode » is photo-inscribed in the fiber core. A wide spectrum light is injected into the fiber and when passing through the sensor, the gratings will reflect a certain wavelength proportional to the step of the grating. Three types of sensors were installed (displacement, strain or tilt sensors). The advantages of FBG technology is longevity, resistance to corrosive environment, electromagnetic immunity and possibility to chain up to twelve FBG on a very long optical single measurement channel.

GNSS monitoring system allows to survey 3D displacements (Easting, Northing and Up) of the bridge components. Three receivers were installed to survey pylons and mid-span deck.


They provide regular and continuous measurements of :
• The Inclination and potential settlement of the pylons.
• Relative and absolute displacements of the pylons in lateral & longitudinal directions.
• Deck deflection
• Accelerations, Vibrations, Modal frequencies can be also measured by adapting the system to high frequency measurements (10Hz)

In total, there are twenty-eight optical sensors insytalled on the bridge : two displacement sensors (one at each joint), four tiltmeters (two on each pier measuring tilt on bridge axes and transverse axes) and twenty-two strain sensors measuring tension in cable stays. There are five GNSS/Insar measuring points and a weather station measuring temperature, wind speed, wind direction and relative humidity, inclusing a robust camera taking picture of the traffic passing on the bridge.

Displacements measurements are correlated and compared with environmental effects data from weather station (Wind speed and direction, Temperature gradient) and live camera (estimated traffic loads) in order to charaterize the structural behaviour of the bridge over service life.

The system is fully automatic using a power system essentially based on solar panels and batteries. In addition to the GNSS monitoring system, Radar Corner Reflectors were also installed in collocation with GNSS antennas to experience monitoring the bridge by radar interferometry (InSAR).

A datalogger gathers the data coming from all the sensors via a full optical fiber network. It process and send the data to a secured server in order to display data through THM Insight© web interface. There are two main visualisation modes :

The Real Time Display mode allows the user to see the last measurement taken and see the current state of the bridge.

The Historical Data mode allows the user to see the evolution of data through long time periods. It can show the seasonal effect, traffic effect, ageing effect or any other environmental effects.

The system will allow to measure long and short term deformations, such as :

  • Foundation settlement
  • Bridge deck creep
  • Stress relaxation
  • Wind effect
  • Thermal expansion
  • Traffic loads.

In parallel, Cementys did a similar upgrade with Gulf Bridge located in the center of Riyadh. In total thirty-one optical sensors and three GNSS system were installed at strategic locations decided in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and the King Saud University.

Structural Health Monitoring is a useful tool in bridge maintenance and management. Monitoring the bridge deformation is essential to detect and predict changes in the material and/or geometric properties and performance.

The system THM Insight© collects continuous displacements measurement, environmental parameters and operating conditions for the purpose of warning abnormal states and giving data for smart maintenance (Condition Based Maintenance).

New Monitoring project : Grand Paris Express Line 16 Work Package 2

We are pleased to collaborate with Salini ImpregiloNGE consortium on the construction of the new line 16 of Grand Paris Express Project.

The monitoring job of Line 16 Work Package 2 deals with the Tunnel portion between the connection structure at the Aulnay operation center and the Bel-Air in Chelles (Seine Saint Denis), that will be commissioned by 2024.

The construction of a 11.1 km tunnel and four railstations – Aulnay, Sevran-Beaudottes, Sevran-Livry, Clichy-Montfermeil will be monitored in real time through our latest technologies (DeltaLOG robotized total stations, Vibrating Wire Sensors, LoraLOG data loggers, Fiber Optic Sensors, InSAR and GNSS remote sensing, THMInsight real time database)

Monitoring tasks are numerous :

  • Existing Building subsidience monitoring in the geotechnical influence area during construction works
  • Existing Building subsidience in the geotechnical influence area during tunelling (TBM)
  • Railroad geometry monitoring in the geotechnical influence area during tunneling
  • Existing underground Network monitoring in the geotechnical influence area during tunneling
  • Geotechnical Monitoring with the our GEOTYS subsidiary (In place Inclinometers, Extensometers, Piezometers)
  • Data Visualization and Interpretation though our THM-Insight database with 24/7 alarm systems (data managers in France and Vietnam)

Combined with other Grand Paris Express & EOLE projects, Cementys will monitor 11 TBM (13 drives) and the construction of more than 40 railway stations or ventilation shafts around Paris in the next couple of years.

Offshore Riser Tension Monitoring

Late 2018, Cementys engineering team finalized its first deepwater riser real-time monitoring project.

The instrumentation operation took place in the Gulf of Mexico, on an existing Tendon Leg Platform (TLP), exposed to frequent Loop Current events.

Vortex Induced Vibrations (VIV) of a riser in severe loop currents can decrease the riser fatigue life and thus may have significant cost impacts.

VIV suppression devices are essential to minimize those events, eventhough VIV behavior presents one of the biggest simulation uncertainties facing the riser engineers.

This shows that full scale monitoring is essential to improve our understanding of VIV response of risers equipped with VIV suppression devices.

Cementys designed and set up a system to measure the strain variation of Top Tension Risers (TTRs), focusing on one of the regions where fatigue damage is expected to be greatest : the top of the riser, around 20 meters above sea level. The objective is to compare efficiency of the different currently installed VIV suppression devices and estimate the induced fatigue damage during a single Loop Current event.

The system is based on the ExtensoVib vibrating wire strain sensors, allowing for accurate strain measurements, with a resolution below 0.1 microstrain.

Each riser is equipped with six ExtensoVib extensometers with a 60° separation: 3 sensors for one monitoring system, 3 others for redundancy.

Sensors are connected to two dynamic data loggers, making a high frequency measurement (20Hz) for high frequency riser oscillations.

 

ExtensoVib risers are bonded directly on the riser metal surface, without the coating, to measure directly the surface strain, without drift or recalibration for a period of several years.

Cementys has a remote access to check the incoming data. The real-time axial loads and bending moments are analyzed in correlation with loop current conditions to follow the fatigue damage accumulation.

ExtensoVib sensors represent a cost-effective solution for riser monitoring projects.

LNG Transport and Transfer

Trelleborg Group developed a new flexible hose “CRYOLINE LNG” for LNG transfers. Cementys was proud to participate to the off-loading tests conducted in collaboration with Connect LNG and Naturgy in Norway.

Through Fiber Optic Monitoring, LNG Hose Asset Integrity can be monitored in real time.

Digue2020 : A shared research platform on innovative Levees

We are glad to be part of this new exciting collaborative project !

The aim of the Digue2020 project is to experiment a new concept of levee with a lime treated soil, and to look at the effects of sea erosion, to study material sustainability and to assess risk perception of marine submersion.

Cementys will be in charge of the permanent monitoring system installed during the levee construction phase.

MOISE Project : a Smart Geocomposite Drainage Membrane

IRSTEA, AFITEX and CEMENTYS initiated in 2016 a R&D project dealing with smart membranes for waste landfill closures.
Through Fiber Optic Cables included inside the membrane, Distributed Temperature Sensing allows detection and localisation of leaks or any water ingresses. The system has been installed, tested and qualified on real waste pond.

Steffie-Orbival : Let’s follow the new Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for Grand Paris Express

The first TBM of the Metro Line 15 South started to dig on April the 3rd from Champigny-sur-Marne. “Steffie-Orbival” TBM will proceed at a 12 meters a day pace, for a total run of 2 178 meters.  

It’s a tradition to name TBM after women, dating back to the 1500s when miners – and anyone working with explosives such as armourers and military engineers – prayed to Saint Barbara to protect them from the dangers underground. Santa Barbara is the patron saint of tunnellers and miners and all who work and visit underground construction environments.

Cementys is monitoring surface settlements, tunnel convergence and nearby deformation of existing structures.

SensoLogger Acoustic 

SensoLogger® Acoustic interrogator propagates high frequency light pulses through a standard single mode optical fiber and analyses the backscattered signal (Coherent Rayleigh Noise scattering). Any event occurring near the fiber and having an acoustic energy, vibration for instance, will disturb the backscattered signal by shifting its phase. The phase shift is analyzed by our interrogator in order to characterise the frequency and amplitude of the event. The precise location of the event is resolved by Time Domain Reflectometry.
